  • Lama Osel has said that Land of Joy is a “very special place” where “good things will happen”.
  • Geshe Tashi has stressed the importance of retreat in Dharma practice.

Land of Joy belongs to you, our community. So many people have already given time, energy and money to setting up the centre and are committed to seeing it flourish and be the place where you can find space and inspiration. We work on a generosity model where you pay what you can for retreats, according to your personal circumstances. There is no correct amount to give, we want everyone to feel welcome to come and experience a very special place.

Dana,or generosity, is an essential part of the Buddhist tradition. Everything we do at Land of Joy is motivated by generosity. The centre was set up as a result of one-off large donations from very generous benefactors. We are very fortunate to have no mortgage and everyone is a volunteer. We have kept costs as low as possible and every penny is spent wisely.

But Land of Joy is an expensive operation to run. We currently rely solely on donations and retreat income to keep us going. Our general running costs are around £4000 per month; our income is around £2400 per month. It is obvious we need more regular income to survive. Setting up, or increasing, a standing order of  £10, £20 or more per month, or whatever you can give, is a great way to help us meet those costs. At present we need to increase the number of regular donors by at least 100.

This year we will just about break even. But breaking even will not help us flourish or indeed help to cover capital costs. For example £45,000 is needed to replace the septic tank and half of the roof.

So, think about how much you want and need Land of Joy to survive, think about how important it is to you, and please, please be generous.

The simplest way to set up a standing order is through online banking to the following account:
